Strachey Lecture: Use or be Used — Regaining Control of AI

On 3 May 2022 Neil Lawrence gave the Strachey Lecture in Computing Science at the University of Oxford. The termly series is named after Christopher Strachey, the first Professor of Computation at Oxford.
The lecture, Use or be Used: Regaining Control of AI, argued that machine intelligences deliver decisions derived from data at a scale far beyond natural counterparts — and that if we devolve decision-making to machines without understanding how they operate, we lose control over our destiny. Much of the debate around AI mistakes machine intelligence for a reflection of our own; the talk held that to control the machine we need to understand the machine, and to understand the machine we first need to understand ourselves.
